Myanmar is a stunning country, renowned for the beautiful temples of Bagan, exceptionally friendly locals and incredible mountains, beaches and lakes.

The South East Asian country is yet to be totally inundated with tourists, so if there’s any time to visit – it’s now.

Get your visa sorted, and getting to and around Myanmar is a walk in the (exceptionally beautiful) park! Here’s all you need to know about a visa for Myanmar for UK citizens.

Get eVisa to Myanmar

Myanmar eVisas

All UK citizens with a British passport will require a visa to enter Myanmar. An eVisa is the best option, and these are usually both easy and convenient to obtain.

EVisas are processed solely online, and your passport must have a validity of six months. This visa will grant you 28 days in the country, and it will be valid 90 days from issue.

If you wish to extend your visa, it can be done while in the country for another 14 days.

Processing time for the eVisas is usually 3 working days, although this can be upgraded at a cost if you are in a rush.

Applying at the Embassy

Another option is to apply for your visa at a Myanmar embassy. This is a great option if you are already travelling, and many people in neighboring country Thailand head to Bangkok to get their Visa for Myanmar for UK citizensvisa for Myanmar.

The visa center in Bangkok is open from 9am to 12pm – and there is always a queue!

Processing time is 1-2 days, and you will need two passport photos, cash, your passport and in some cases, your flight details into the country.

Port of Entry

During your application you will be instructed to enter your port of entry.

It is fine, although not recommended, to specify a border crossing and then enter at a different one.

To save queuing and extra admin on entry into Myanmar, it’s best to enter at the same port you specified on your application.

Port of Exit

You do not have to exit from the same port you enter. If you enter from one of the designated land crossings, you are still allowed to exit via the international airports.

However, if you enter Myanmar through the Shan state or Chin state, you must exit at the crossing through which you entered.

What to watch out for?

During national holidays in the country, the eVisa processing center will be closed.

This means that any visa applications won’t go through until the holiday has ended.

UK emergency travel documents are not permitted for entry into Myanmar. You must have a passport with 6 months’ validity in order to be allowed in.

However, they are eligible for exiting the country. This means that if your passport is lost or damaged while you are in Myanmar, you will be allowed to leave using ETDs.
